Scouts Honor Fallen Soldiers at Marietta National Cemetery

From Atlanta’s 11 Alive News:

Marietta National Cemetery is awash in red, white and blue, thanks to the hard work of 1500 scouts from across metro Atlanta.

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cubs, and Brownies took part in a Memorial Day weekend tradition on Saturday morning by placing flags at the graves of Georgia’s fallen soldiers. Scout leaders spent the morning handing out huge bundles of flags to the scouts, who spread out throughout the cemetery to make sure every soldier was honored.

Marietta National Cemetery is the final resting place for about 10,000 fallen soldiers. Those buried at the cemetery represent every war from the American Revolution to the War in Iraq.

“I like honoring the veterans because they fought for our country,” said Life Scout Harry Barnes.

A Memorial Day message from Michael Yon in Iraq

A Memorial Day message from Michael Yon in Iraq

Michael Yon sends a Memorial Day message from Iraq. In part, it reads:

Q has already made it to Germany and is about to be flown home. CSM Pippin is on his way to Germany. Along the way, excellent groups like Soldiers’ Angels will welcome them home, I expect. My readers will find out here where to send messages once that news is released. Both men often lamented to me how frustrating it was to be back home and realize that the average American is not aware of practically any of the progress that’s been made in Iraq. Both men darken with something closer to anger when they consider the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers and the fact that while the media most likely counted the deaths in all instances, they also most likely failed to mention any of the good things their fellow soldiers had accomplished while in Iraq.
