NY Governor Eliot Spitzer’s license revolt

Governor Eliot Spitzer has decreed that illegal aliens can be issued a New York drivers license, beginning in December, and the word is a Mexican Matricula ID card will be accepted as proof of identity (they are easily obtainable on America’s street corners). The breeder documents accepted by Mexico, when they issue them, are dubious at best.

The New York Post noted today that Governor Spitzer is meeting more than a little internal resistance:

You can add New York’s county clerks — the folks who have to process the paperwork and deal with the bureaucratic fallout — to the rapidly growing roster of those demanding that Gov. Spitzer rescind his unilateral executive order allowing illegal aliens to get state driver’s licenses. The New York State Association of County Clerks yesterday voted overwhelmingly to oppose Spitzer’s policy change, calling it “ill-advised” and charging that it would “pose significant security concerns … create unneeded confusion … [and] lead to a significant influx of illegal immigration.” Moreover, in an informal show of hands after they adopted that resolution, more than a dozen of those clerks said they would defy Spitzer and refuse to process any license applications from people ineligible under rules that were tightened after 9/11.

The Post summed up their editorial this way:

Spitzer’s order runs counter to new rules in nearly every other state; they’ve tightened restrictions on licenses, the most universally accepted form of identity verification in America, since 9/11. Why Eliot Spitzer wants to make it easier for terrorists is simply beyond us. But he does.
